ABSTRACT

In the study of the influence of pedaling cadence in cycling, numerous cost functions have been hypothesized in the literature whose minimization should lead to an optimal value corresponding to the cadence instinctively adopted by cyclists. One of the most used cost function is related to the average moment generated by the leg joints during a pedaling cycle. An alternative cost function, proposed in this study, is based on an equivalent moment derived from the power law generated by the muscles. The advantage is due to the energy approach, which requires more easily obtainable experimental data as input.
